ááááááááHP 9000 Series 800 HP-UX and Novell Netware: The Best of Both
ááááááááWorlds!
áááááááááááááááááááááááááááááááScript
ááááááááWelcome to Novell NetWare and the HP 9000 Series 800
ááááááááPresentation. This presentation answers the most commonly
ááááááááasked customer questions:
áááááááá* How does the HP 9000 Series 800 work in Novell Environments?
áááááááá* What benefits can I realize by adding an HP 9000 to this
áááááááááááenvironment?
ááááááááSince Novell NetWare currently controls over 60% of the PC-LAN
áááááááámarket, being able to articulate how an HP 9000 works in the
ááááááááenvironment may be key to your success in selling HP 9000
ááááááááSeries 800's into your accounts.
ááááááááThis presentation focuses on benefits and high level
ááááááááfunctionality. For details on NetWare/9000 functionality,
ááááááááconsult "NW800S" on the Network Hotline. Information on
ááááááááqualifying an account and software performance are contained on
ááááááááthe GSY Hotline under "NWARE" and "NetWare", respectively. A
áááááááávideo taped success story of a Series 800 customer using
ááááááááNetWare/9000 will be available in Q4 92. Consult with the
ááááááááSales Response Center for ordering information.

..pictureb:\uxnov1.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
ááááááááHP-UX and Novell NetWare provide customers the best of both
ááááááááworlds:
áááááááá* HP-UX - A Rich Commerical UNIX environment e.g. Open
ááááááááááááááááááPlatform, Development Tools, Databases, Security and
ááááááááááááááááááManageability etc.
áááááááá* NetWare - Industry Leading Resource Sharing (file and printer
áááááááááááááááááááásharing) and ease-of-use.
ááááááááThis combination provides many benefits to customers. In
ááááááááparticular, for those who wish to go beyond standard file and
ááááááááprinter sharing and move into client server and distributed
áááááááácomputing, this combination enables customers to continue using
ááááááááfamiliar tools from Novell, while taking advantage of leading
ááááááááedge technologies such as OSF DCE on the HP 9000 Series 800.
ááááááááThis presentation will discuss these benefits in more detail.
.pa
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV2 "Hewlett-Packard and Novell"
..pictureb:\uxnov2.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
ááááááááThis slide covers HP's strong relationship with Novell.
ááááááááAlthough HP inked a relationship agreement with Novell in 1991,
ááááááááthis was actually formalizing a long-time relationship which
áááááááástarted in 1988 (5 years ago).
áááááááá* The HP relationship doesn't just focus on the HP 9000 and HP
ááááááááááá3000. It's pervasive throughout HP. Discuss all the other
áááááááááááareas on the slide e.g. laserjets, HP routers, Vectra,
áááááááááááNative PA-Risc.
áááááááá* This is a strong pervasive and long-time relationship. (Sun
áááááááááááis relatively new in working with Novell and is not as
ááááááááááápervasive.)
.pa
ááááááááSlide UXNOV3: "NetWare and HP: A Common Processing Architecture"
..pictureb:\uxnov3.gal,65211,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* Both NetWare on the HP 9000 Series 800 and Native NetWare on
ááááááááááPA-RISC run on HP's powerful Precision Architecture RISC
ááááááááááProcessor. The difference is that on the HP 9000 Series 800,
ááááááááááboth HP-UX and NetWare run on the same platform with HP-UX as
ááááááááááthe operating system and NetWare for UNIX (formerly known as
áááááááááá"Portable NetWare"). With Native NetWare, the NetWare NOS is
ááááááááááthe operating system.
áááááááá* Both platforms are complimentary which offers customers more
ááááááááááchoices.
ááááááááNOTE: NLM = NetWare Loadable Module. An application or tool
ááááááááwhich runs on a native Novell operating environment i.e. when
ááááááááNovell is the only operating system (typical of what one finds
ááááááááon an Intel based Novell Server) Although Novell claims that
ááááááááthere are thousands of these NLM applications available, most
ááááááááare basic tools already resident in standard operating system
ááááááááenvironments such as TCP-IP and file back-up utilities. To
áááááááádate, there are few real NLM applications and most Novell users
áááááááádo not use Novell Servers for mission critical applications;
áááááááámost Novell users use the basic file and print capabil- ities
ááááááááonly. However, there is increasing interest in developing
ááááááááNLM's to run client-server applications.

ááááááááSlide: UXNOV4 "NetWare for the HP 9000 - Proven Track Record"
..pictureb:\uxnov4.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* HP is currently Novell's #1 sales leader of NetWare for UNIX.
ááááááááHP sells more units of NetWare than any of the other 30 NetWare
ááááááááfor UNIX partners including SCO, IBM, SUN and DG.
.pa
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV5 "Product Features"
..pictureb:\uxnov5.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* Netware for the HP9000 Series 800 allows you to have the same
ááááááááááfile and print services your customers have come to know with
ááááááááááNovell on Intel based servers. The Series 800 offers the
ááááááááááadditional benefits of rich commercial functionality of the
ááááááááááHP-UX operating environment.
áááááááá* NetWare for the HP9000 offers Novell Virtual Terminal Support
áááááááááá(NVT) as part of the standard product. This allows PC
ááááááááááclients to access UNIX applications on the HP 9000 without
ááááááááááhaving to add extra ARPA software (with Telnet) on your PC
ááááááááááclients and uses much less PC memory. If your customer
ááááááááááhas many PC clients, this could save a lot of money in buying
ááááááááááARPA software and additional memory for every PC.
.pa
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV6 "Integrate HP 9000's into existing Novell
ááááááááNetworks"
..pictureb:\uxnov6.gal,65112,49080,9,58,15,
áááááááá(NOTE - Slides UXNOV6-UXNOV11 describe how the HP 9000 Series
áááááááá800 can seamlessly integrate into various Novell environments,
ááááááááand the benefits it can bring.)
ááááááááKey Points:
ááááááááFor customers with an existing Novell network, HP9000 Series
áááááááá800's can seamlessly integrate with these Intel based Novell
ááááááááservers using NetWare/9000. It is seamless in that:
áááááááá* UNIX applications on the HP 9000 can utilize printers
ááááááááááanywhere on the network. Even printers which may be
ááááááááááconfigured off another Novell server. No reprogramming of
ááááááááááthe UNIX application is required to take advantage of this.
ááááááááááWith OpenSpool one can configure these remote printers as
ááááááááááanother LP device. NetWare knows how to communicate
áááááááááábetween the HP 9000 server and the Intel based Netware Print
ááááááááááservers.
áááááááá* PC applications can utilize printers configured off the UNIX
ááááááááááservers as if they were Novell printers.
áááááááá* PC's anywhere on the network can access HP 9000 S/800 files
ááááááááááas if they were on another Novell server (e.g. m:\filename -
ááááááááááthe HP 9000 looks like the m:\ directory to the end user).
ááááááááááThis reduces the need to retrain users if they need to share
ááááááááááfiles stored on an HP 9000 server.
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV7 "Consolidate Servers"
..pictureb:\uxnov7.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* If a customer has decided to place an HP 9000 Series 800 into
ááááááááááan environment to run a business application, they could
ááááááááááeliminate having to manage back-up and configuration of two
ááááááááááservers by placing the files plus NetWare on the HP 9000
ááááááááááSeries 800.
áááááááá* Your customer should expect to see roughly equivalent
ááááááááááperformance on the HP 9000 as on the Intel based Novell
ááááááááááserver and they gain the benefits of easier management, and
áááááááááásecurity the HP 9000 provides.
.pa
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV8 "Centrally Manage Novell"
..pictureb:\uxnov8.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* If your customer has multiple Intel based Novell NetWare
ááááááááááservers and there is a need to keep them (e.g. such as a
ááááááááááspecial NLM application not available in UNIX), then you can
ááááááááááuse HP OpenView and products from Network Edge, (an HP OV
áááááááááápremier channel partner) to manage this environment centrally
ááááááááááfrom the HP 9000 Series 800. HP's offering is the first and
ááááááááááonly solution today which can provide true centralized
ááááááááááenterprise management of NetWare
áááááááá* What can be managed with HP OpenView and Network Edge:
áááááááááá- Novell Servers using ServerView/OV from Network Edge (Avail
ááááááááááááQ1, 93)
áááááááááá- Novell PC Clients using StationView/OV from Network Edge
áááááááááááá(Avail Q4, 92)
áááááááááá- Other networks e.g. HP 9000's or other systems and devices
ááááááááááááusing TCP/IP (See OpenView material for OV capabilities)
áááááááá* What the above enables:
áááááááááá- With the HP Network Node Manager one can draw all Novell
ááááááááááááservers graphically on the GUI screen.
áááááááááá- If the operator clicks the mouse on a server, then one can
áááááááááááásee all the Novell client PC's configured to it.
áááááááááá- One can get many statistics and status on these systems
ááááááááááááe.g. Network connections, configuration, memory
ááááááááááááallocation etc.
áááááááááá- StationView/OV enable one to reconfigure Novell PC clients
áááááááááááá(ie. change the autoexec.bat files) directly from the HP
áááááááááááá9000 Series 800. If the client PC is turned off e.g. the
ááááááááááááperson goes home at night, then one can still collect
áááááááááááástatistics from the HP 9000. The configuration file will
áááááááááááábe automatically downloaded using StationView/OV when the
ááááááááááááclient PC powers up in the morning.
áááááááá* The ability to manage the PC clients and the ability to
áááááááááámanage networks and devices such as TCP/IP in addition to
ááááááááááNovell, are benefits which Novell's Network Management
ááááááááááproducts do not provide today.
áááááááá* With Omniback and Quest Plan B products, you can back up your
ááááááááááNovell Servers and Clients to the HP 9000 Series 800. Quest
ááááááááááPlan B also allows you to save Novell file attributes in the
ááááááááááback-up.
áááááááá* These capabilities add up to better management and reduced
áááááááááácosts of administering a distributed Novell environment.
.pa
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV9 "A Platform for Integrating with the Enterprise"
..pictureb:\uxnov9.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* The Gartner Group in their study, "Midrange Systems and
ááááááááááServer Evaluations, 1991/1992"evaluated features of about 26
ááááááááááplatform and operating system vendors. In this study, the HP
áááááááááá9000 Series 800 rated #1 out of all 26 vendors investigated
ááááááááááin the areas of inter-operability and inter-vendor
áááááááááácommunications.
áááááááá* When you compare this capability with that of Intel based
ááááááááááservers, the HP 9000 provides superior communication
áááááááááácapabilities for distributed replicated sites which require
áááááááááástrong integration with the enterprise.
áááááááá* With the HP 9000 Series 800 you can leverage the strength of
ááááááááááHP -UX networking with NetWare Workgroups.
.pa
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV10 "Integrate Mixed NOS Environments"
..pictureb:\uxnov10.gal,65211,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* If your customer has multiple NOS' in their environement such
ááááááááááas LanManager, Pacer (for Macintoshes), or NFS (for UNIX
ááááááááááWorkstations), in addition to Novell, these can all be placed
ááááááááááon the same HP 9000 Series 800 server. This allows for the
áááááááááásharing of printers in both environments e.g. Unix
ááááááááááWorkstations in Department 1 can access the printer in
ááááááááááDepartment 2 and Visa Versa.
áááááááá* The HP 9000 also provides easier management in that there is
ááááááááááonly 1 server to manage as opposed to multiple (one cannot
áááááááááárun LanManager on a Novell Intel based Server). The HP 9000
ááááááááááalso provides industry leading NFS performance.
.pa
ááááááááSlide UXNOV11 "The Best Server for Migrating from File and
ááááááááááPrint to ClientServer Computing."
..pictureb:\uxnov11.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
ááááááááMany customers today are using Intel platforms for Novell
ááááááááNetWare file and printer sharing. However many customers are
áááááááánow outgrowing this platform. As customers look to having
áááááááátheir server provide more processing and mission critical
áááááááádatabase services and the industry moves to distributed
áááááááácomputing and client server, HP-UX business servers provide the
áááááááábest capabilities for customers migrating to these new
áááááááácomputing paradymes.
ááááááááWhy? HP-UX provides the following capabilities which are
áááááááánecessary for building robust Client Server solutions (these
ááááááááare based on the HP 9000 Series 800 Pitch, included are some
áááááááá"memory joggers". Refer to the HP 9000 presentation materi-
ááááááááals for more details):
áááááááá- The Broadest System Growth Path - To support the type of
áááááááááááprocessing which is required for Client-Server, more
áááááááááááprocessing power is necessary. If one compares the growth
áááááááááááand trends, RISC technology will provide the necessary power
áááááááááááfor these applications. With the HP 9000 family you will
áááááááááááhave the broadest range of object code compatible systems
áááááááááááin the industry.
.pa
áááááááá- Proven, Reliable Databases and Tools - Leading relational
ááááááááááádatabases have been running in the HP-UX environment for
áááááááááááyears. Customers have trusted their mission critical
áááááááááááapplications to the HP-UX environment. This is not the case
áááááááááááin the Intel environment.
áááááááá- A Rich Commercial UNIX environment - HP-UX provides strong
ááááááááááásecurity, high availability, System and Network Management,
áááááááááááand Industry Leading Case Development tools.
áááááááá- Thousands of applications - because the UNIX environment
áááááááááááis an open platform, it enables one to access thousands of
ááááááááááácommercial applications.
áááááááá- The Best Choice of Networks and API's - In addition to
ááááááááááásupporting Novell's SPX API's the HP 9000 S/800's offer a
áááááááááááplethora of other API's which will be crucial to your
áááááááááááclient-server implementation. Services such as OSF DCE,
áááááááááááNCS, the widest range of networking products, Appleshare to
áááááááááááname a few.
áááááááá- HP provides industry leading client-server consulting
áááááááááááservices to get you up and running.
ááááááááThe main benefit that many industry research reports have
ááááááááindicated is that UNIX offers a commercially viable development
ááááááááplatform for Client-Server development, and because it is an
ááááááááopen platform; it shields you from technology lock-in to any
ááááááááone vendor. These requirements, in addition to the
ááááááááavailability of tools and applications, means that the HP9000
ááááááááSeries 800 provides the best capabilities for moving your
áááááááácompany from basic file and print to distributed computing and
ááááááááclient-server.

ááááááááSlide: UXNOV12 "Case Study: A Prominent Law Firm"
..pictureb:\uxnov12.gal,64232,49080,9,57,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* A prominent Law firm has 5 Distributed Offices and over 650
ááááááááááemployees.
áááááááá* They were facing challenges of:
áááááááááá- Fast Growth
áááááááááá- Geographically Distributed Sites
áááááááááá- Protecting existing investments in equipment, particularly
ááááááááááááin PC's and printers for their Lawyers
áááááááááá- Minimizing Downtime
.pa
ááááááááSlide UXNOV13 "A Prominent Law Firm Before"
..pictureb:\uxnov13.gal,64124,49080,9,57,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* Before HP was involved, they had over 500 standalone PC's and
ááááááááááa few Novell Servers.
áááááááá* The firm also had over 350 laser printers. Because the
ááááááááááLegal profession is tightly bound to paper and deadlines,
ááááááááááthe lawyers demanded that at least each secretary have a
ááááááááááprinter, and many lawyers had printers as well. Needless to
áááááááááásay, the firm was spending a fortune on laser printers!
áááááááá* The firm ran their business on a proprietary midrange
áááááááááácomputer using a legal software package. (This computer ran
ááááááááááthe PICK operating system). Only 30 people in the immediate
ááááááááááoffice where the system was located had access to the PICK
áááááááááásystem.
áááááááá* Time billing for Lawyer's time was written on paper and then
ááááááááááeither mailed/faxed to the central office and then keyed
ááááááááááinto the old PICKsystem. (Time Billing is the way the firm
ááááááááááaccounts for time and thus collects revenue from it's
ááááááááááclients.) This created a lot of errors, and
ááááááááááupdates/corrections were often necessary. At times this
ááááááááááupset clients when mis-billing occured.
.pa
ááááááááSlide: UXNOV14 and UXNOV15 "A Prominent Law Firm - After"
..pictureb:\uxnov14.gal,63972,49080,9,57,15,
..pictureb:\uxnov15.gal,64798,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* Today, over 650 PC's in the firms are networked (they grew
ááááááááááfrom 500)
áááááááá* They are managed by 11 file servers - Netware on INTEL for
ááááááááááword processing files and Netware for UNIX on the HP 9000
ááááááááááSeries 800 for mission critical business files and
ááááááááááapplications.
.pa
áááááááá* The HP 9000 Series 800 was selected for mission critical
ááááááááááapplications because of the superior database, tool and
áááááááááácommercial functionality of the HP-UX platform
áááááááááárelative to that on Intel servers.
áááááááá* TMC's Legal Application Software was ported to the HP 9000
ááááááááááusing available utilities. (Ultimate's Ult/IX environment)
áááááááá* Netware for UNIX, HP's Networking Foundation products, and
áááááááááásome utilities such as Ultimate's Ult/IX, allowed the HP
áááááááááá9000 to seamlessly integrate into this environment without
ááááááááááhaving to change the TMC application (while protecting the
áááááááááácustomer's investment in application, and PC's.)
áááááááá- Printers can now be shared across all the file servers. For
ááááááááááexample, if the New York Office needs a report printed
áááááááááálocally from the HP 9000 located in Washington, all they need
ááááááááááto do is specify their local printer. Netware on the HP 9000
áááááááááácommunicates with the Netware Server in New York and
áááááááááátransparently ensures that it is routed to the correct
ááááááááááprinter.
áááááááá- Files for other applications could also be shared; PC's could
ááááááááááautomatically mount files residing on the HP 9000 in addition
ááááááááááto files located on the Intel-based Netware Server and make
ááááááááááthem appear local; they look like they reside on the local
ááááááááááharddrive, but they are physically located on the server. In
ááááááááááother words, the user could type in for the L:\dosfilename in
ááááááááááa word processing application and pull that file off the HP
áááááááááá9000. In a legal environment, the ability for work-groups
ááááááááááto exchange information in this way is critical to meeting
áááááááááádeadlines.
áááááááá- With the fully networked environment, all authorized
ááááááááááemployees had access to the time billing system on the HP
áááááááááá9000. This enabled each group to do direct time entry into
ááááááááááthe application. This also enabled everyone to review their
ááááááááááentries and make corrections and updates. This all resulted
ááááááááááin fewer errors in time entry, which resulted in faster, more
ááááááááááaccurate billing to clients; which has a direct impact on
áááááááááárevenue to the firm.
áááááááá- The firm realized better communication through e-mail
ááááááááááconnectivity...a feature which was not available in the past.
ááááááááááBetter analysis on business activities was also possible
áááááááááásince information could be pulled from the HP 9000 TMC system

..pictureb:\uxnov16.gal,65535,49151,9,58,15,
ááááááááKey Points:
áááááááá* HP offers worldwide support for our HP 9000 Series 800
ááááááááááNetWare products. For firms with broad geographic coverage
ááááááááááthis provides a common way to support multinational firms.
ááááááááááSince many Intel based NetWare vendors tend to be limited to
ááááááááááa region or country, this provides a superior solution to
áááááááááácustomers.
áááááááá* HP offers around the clock support.
áááááááá* HP also has Certified Netware Engineers on Staff.
